DeeAnne Gorman
Vocalist & Poet DeeAnne Gorman
BIO : Jazz Vocalist DeeAnne Gorman

Hailing from the South, vocalist DeeAnne Gorman grew up with music in church and trained in voice, dance and various musical instruments early on. Through school, she participated in local and statewide choruses and concert bands, and sang with and directed a four-part harmony madrigal group. After graduating from The George Washington University in Washington, DC and continuing studies at The New School in New York, her persistent travel bug bit again and she moved to France, discovering French song and performing with Studio Voices of Paris.

Once back New York City, she began merging, or rather morphing, musical theater, pop and jazz song. After being exposed to rising talents as well as established legends on the jazz scene and listening more and more to her favorites (Ella Fitzgerald, Jimmy Scott, Shirley Horn), she found herself focusing on her own interpretations of jazz standards. Profiting from the city’s wealth of musical treasures, in addition to vocal studies with Catherine Aks and Amy London, jazz piano with Tardo Hammer, and attending the renowned Barry Harris jazz workshops, she checks out numerous jam sessions held nightly. At Lenox Lounge, the Local 802 Musicians’ Union, Cleopatra’s Needle, Arturo’s, Robin’s Nest and St. Nick’s Pub, she’s been thrilled to sit in with such talents as pianists Harry Whitaker, Rob Bargad and Lafayette Harris; bassists Jim Cammack, Pat O’Leary and Joony Booth; drummers Cliff Barbaro and Jimmy Wormworth; and saxophonists James Carter, Wayne Escoffery and Joel Frahm. Some of these seasoned names have also appeared in DeeAnne's own ensembles.

In the recording studio, in addition to working with composers and DJs on various projects, DeeAnne’s own first demo of standards, which she arranged, co-edited, mixed and mastered, and her most recent recording of select favorites – given a special jazz/Latin/MidEast touch with her current rhythm section – have drawn attention and praise, as well as airplay on Israeli radio. Onstage, her live performances have varied from blending her own poetry with jazz song, cabaret productions she co-wrote and in which she starred, to more recently, regular jazz gigs as leader. Alongside piano, guitar, instrumental duos, trios and quartets she has sung venues in Europe and the U.S., including New York's Danny’s Skylight Cabaret Room, Upstairs at Rose’s Turn, Nightingale Lounge, Orbit-East Harlem, Shutters, the former Chez Suzette, Kavehaz, The Sanctuary and Varjak. Most recently she has appeared regularly at the Jolly Hotel Madison Towers' Whaler Bar in Murray Hill.

Her fascination with and journey to jazz through the sacred, classical and cabaret genres continues to be inspired by the historical richness of this music and the freedom for which it calls. On her way, DeeAnne partners with some of the most talented musicians on the scene, and with beauty, honesty and creativity of sound and style, brings us along into her unique world of music.
